Abstract
To secure national rodent resources and support the effective utilization of laboratory animal resources, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has launched the ¡°BIO REsources INitiative (BIOREIN)¡±. This project was designed to reduce Korea¡¯s high dependence on foreign experimental animal resources, which poses a potential threat to the research and development of medicine and bio sciences. To this end, it is inevitable to secure domestically developed laboratory animal resources. The MFDS plans to develop human disease animal models. The infrastructure which stores biopsy specimens essential for the recycling system of experimented animals also needs to be established. The Laboratory Animal Resources Bank (LAREB) and its strategic management system will play an important role in conserving laboratory animal resources and maintaining quality control. The BIOREIN will promote high throughput research on drug development and other scientific issues by sharing laboratory animal resources and advancing into the global market with our own originality in the development of laboratory animal resources. In light of laboratory animal resources¡¯ contribution to scientific progress, the initiative will further encourage the domestic research on bio sciences. The MFDS expects that the BIOREIN will serve as a momentum to develop domestic laboratory animal resources and that it will make Korea a global leading player in this area.
